Afterlight: Editing Photos
For my magazine, I wanted to create a polaroid look for my photos. I tried many different filters on photoshop but then resulted to the app Afterlight.
I started by choosing one of my pictures.
I then changed to brightness to 100.
Then I edited the contrast to -30.
Afterwards, I changed the exposure to 8 so that it brightens the image up.
Next I added the grain to make the image look a little unclear, so I changed the grain to 20.
Then I moved onto adding filters to the image, so first I added ember and changed it to 40.
Then I added chestnut to 63.
Next I added Lume at 20.
Finally I added a old affect so chose 02 at 46.
The final image then turned out to look like this.

Photographs I did not use on my contents page and double pages
For my contents page and double page I narrowed down the images that I took and used the ones that were best fitted for my magazine.
On this image everything is in focus but her eyes are closed which doesn't create the effect that I was after. This picture shows the male model mid talking which could be used as a candid picture but it did not fit with the style of my magazine.
There is a shadow created behind the model and the natural light creates darker and lighter spots on the wall. Like the image above, he is seen again in mid conversation.
This photograph shows the movement of the two models which is why it is unclear and there is too much of the wall rather than the models.
This photograph captures the wind on their face due to the weather conditions being bad and the camera is slightly blurry due to it being moved.
This image creates shadows behind the person which are harder to cut around when placing upon a different background.
Eyes are closed and shadow created behind him.
Light is too bright and reflects off the models forehead.
Photographs that I did not use on my front cover
For my front cover I had took a range of different photographs which I then rationalised down to the one that I used on my front cover and the others that I used on my double page.
This photograph does not focus on the models in the foreground and has a blurry effect over their faces. This photograph is also seen to be very blurry but due to the time of day in which the photographs were took, the lighting causes the models to appear darker but also a line around their hair where their hair is reflecting the sun.
This photograph is also not in focus but none of the models are seen to be looking at the camera and one of the female members are obstructed so is unable to be seen behind the male.
I used the portrait version of this photograph as I thought that this image focuses too much on the background due to it being a wide angle shot and cuts off half the body of the male. By using a portrait image it allows you to see some of the background but the main focus is upon the foreground.
This photograph shows a action shot and the movement of the hand creates a blurred effect.
The quality of the image is effected by the light so there is a lot of noise on the photograph which takes away from the models.

Style Model
From research, I have changed the style model to Notion due to the images that I took fitted with the theme of this magazine rather than Rolling Stones. The photographs had more of an indie and alternative look but also quite a minimalist look to them but Notion has that kind of theme across its magazine.

Article
From early 2010, Fleur
have been in the music industry fighting to get up into the Top 40. Until
last week their tries had failed but after realising their third EP ‘Eden
Falls’ it rocketed through the charts reaching number 5 in the UK Alternative/Indie Charts within the
first 12 hours of it being released. From then on the band has been in and out
of different radio stations doing interviews and acoustic performances. We
managed to catch up with them in a studio in London to see how they are doing
Interviewer: Good morning, it’s lovely to have you here
today.
Lewis: Morning, Thank you for having us here.
Interviewer: Recently we have heard your debut single, “Eden
Falls”, rocket up the charts to number 5
in the alternative charts; did you ever think
that you would get such a positive
reaction from the British Public?
Kate: Never had I thought that so many people would have
enjoyed our music. We had written majority of the songs when we were in LA and
managed to meet some amazing people such as Kodaline that co-wrote some of the
songs with us. It’s such an amazing feeling getting such positive feedback from
the public after the amount of effort we have put in over the past 4 years.
Interviewer: We seen that you performing at Leeds this
weekend, what was it like to have a
reaction like you did in front of so
many people?
Ellen: It was amazing! There was definitely more people than
what we expected so it was great to hear them sing along to out songs and
overall enjoy the atmosphere. I think it was a lovely part of the festival that
we were playing on as well, as it was out of the main area it was a lot quiet
and it just seemed like a private show, it was also a lot more personal with
the people that actually came to see us.
Interviewer: Do you see yourself performing in any other
festivals next summer such as Glastonbury or The V Festival?
Kate: I think it would be great to play a few more
festivals, the overall atmosphere of the place is enchanting and I have always
enjoyed going with friends.
Lewis: Yeah, we used to go to them when we were younger and
it was always nice to come and see upcoming bands. Like I remember one year we
all came to see the wombats on the other stage at Glastonbury. We had come down
on the Thursday night to get prepared and to make sure the text was set up
properly so that the next day would involve in just getting up and going. So
the next morning came and we got up at something like 6am so we could get right
at the front of the stage and I always remember that performance because at the
time they were a small band that didn’t have many people turn up but they put
their heart and soul into the performance and made it worth coming to see them.
That’s why I think it’s important for artists to put all their energy and enthusiasm
into their performance.
Interviewer: So are there any anymore tracks that you are
planning on releasing? Or is there a new album that will be hitting the shelves
for stocking filler?
Ellen: Well the next song we are releasing is called
“Runaway” which is off our upcoming album “Contradiction”. It’s been a long
process of actually making the album but when we listed to the final cut the
other day it sounds so good.
Interviewer: What is there to expect on the album?
Kate: Well it’s different to my first single but there are
different styles throughout the album.
Each song has a different meaning behind it. We have worked extremely
hard on writing, playing and producing the album so it’s something that we will
be proud of rather than it being a mixture of songs that have been rushed to form
an album. As we all play a different instrument, we have contributed towards actually
making the music as well.
Interviewer: Is there any collaborations with any other
stars?
Lewis: Not yet, but hopefully in the future. I think we
would all love to do a song with Kodaline, they have always been a band that we
have aspired to be like so to actually be in a song with them would be amazing.
Interviewer: Is there anything that you would like to say to
your fans?
Kate: I would just like to thank them for all the support
they have done over the past few years to get us to where we are today. From
people watching our YouTube videos that we made in Lewis’ bedroom to paying
money to come and see us perform.
Ellen: I think going back to a home crowd is always nice as
well because the whole community has been behind us and they always put the
effort into support us so I think it’s nice to go back and see them.
Interviewer: What do you do when you have time off?
Ellen: I think going home and seeing family is always important
because they’ve always supported us from day one. I also love just having some
time off and doing things like going for walks or going out for dinner, you
forget how lovely it is to spend time with the people you love. I mean, don’t get
me wrong, I do love spending time with these guys but just like everyone you
can get sick of them sometimes (laughs)
Interviewer: So for the big news, is there going to be a new
tour?
Lewis: Yes, we are happy to announce a 2015 spring tour. We’re
so excited to actually have a tour. People have been asking for one for quite a
while now but we wanted to wait until we had the album completed so it would be
a proper tour.
Interviewer: So when do tickets go on sale?
Kate: I think they go on sale on the 12th
December so if anyone is looking for a good Christmas presents, you can get yourself
a ticket to our show.
Interviewer: Do you
know what dates you’re playing in the UK and Ireland?
Lewis: Hmm, I think we are playing at the Club Academy in
Manchester on the 5th May, Cockpit in Leeds on the 6th, Cabaret
Voltaire in Edinburgh on the 7th, Limelight in Dublin on the 9th,
Academy in Dublin on the 10th, The Library in Birmingham on
the 11th, Leadmill in Sheffield on the 12th, Sugarmill in
Stoke on the 13th, The Junction on the 15th Oxford, two
dates at the Electric Ballroom in London on 16th and 17th
and The Academy in Newcastle on the 19th.
Interviewer: Is there any thought about a European tour?
Ellen: I think we are planning on one once the album is
released and we see how they respond to it. Its definitely on the agenda to
though, I love traveling around Europe. We actually recorded a lot of the album
in Paris. Love that city!
Interviewer: Have you thought about travelling to the US to
see if you could make it there?
Kate: Well we have some promotion stuff to do when the album
comes out, so I think we’re off to LA in a few weeks because we’re supporting
Bastille on their headline tour which is such an amazing experience to be
involved in.
Interviewer: So shall there be an US tour of your own any
time soon?
Lewis: I think we are also planning on having one in the
autumn time once we have finished the UK and the European, but we shall definitely
try to make it over there.
Interviewer: Well it’s
been very lovely meeting you all.
Ellen: Thank you for having us.
Font Samples
I have collected some sample which I have liked for the title of my magazine I have chosen to use the third one from the bottom as it is simple but still links to the look that my magazine has.

Front Cover Influence
This is the influence for how I am going to set out my magazine. As I am using three people I am going to position them in the way they are positioned and find a scenic area in which photos can be took. I am also going to edit the picture so that the title of the magazine is placed behind the band and the subheadings are placed in front of the artist. I shall keep to a colour scheme of the surroundings and the clothes in which the models wear as it creates a house style.

Reader Profile

Reader Profile; Publishers
NME publishers use reader profiles to create an average of what their readers are interested in. This allows them to create a magazine which readers shall be interested in and will want to buy monthly. The publishers can then create a magazine which fits the need of the target audience. Asking the target audience who they want to see on the front cover of the magazine will attract them into buying it as the main article is usually about the figure on the front.
